Welcome to Weekend #8

Great golf, fascinating stories and a sunrise over one of Andalucía’s most iconic courses.

There are some weekends when you’re reminded exactly why we started Grapes & Greens.

Our recent visit to San Roque Club Club in Andalucía was one of them.

We were there to film and record our latest podcast with Stephen Dundas, and it turned into a brilliant few days of golf, history, transformation and some seriously good conversation.

A Story Worth Telling

Stephen’s story is quite something.

A former British Amateur Champion, Stephen saw his life change after winning one of amateur golf’s most prestigious titles. That victory opened doors around the world and set him on a journey that would eventually bring him to San Roque Club.

We talked about what that win meant to him, his time in Russia and the experiences that shaped his career.

We also explored the redevelopment of San Roque Club Club and Stephen’s role in transforming a property with such a remarkable golfing history.

The Perfect Backdrop

And then there was the setting.

Sunday morning. The San Roque Club clubhouse behind us. The 18th green stretching out in front. The sun slowly rising over the course.

It was one of those moments when you look around and think:

This is exactly what Grapes & Greens should look like.

We’ve always believed the setting matters.

We don’t just want to sit behind a desk and record interviews. We want to take you inside the places where these stories happen and introduce you to the people who have helped shape them.

And increasingly, those locations are becoming a huge part of what makes the Grapes & Greens YouTube channel worth watching, giving our audience something much more than just another podcast.

Great Places. Great People. Great Stories.

That’s what Grapes & Greens has always been about.

And Stephen Dundas certainly has a story worth hearing.

🎙️ Coming 18 November

Our full San Roque Club episode with Stephen Dundas will be released on 18 November.

We can’t wait for you to see it.

A Burgundy Worth Discovering

Vignerons de Buxy Mâcon-Villages Vérizet Vieilles Vignes 2023 | £19.50

There’s something rather satisfying about finding a wine that punches well above its price tag. And this Mâcon-Villages Vieilles Vignes 2023 from Vérizet does exactly that.

Made from Chardonnay vines around 40–50 years old, it offers everything we love about Burgundy, without the usual Burgundy price tag.

Those older vines naturally produce smaller yields, giving the wine more concentration while keeping the freshness and elegance that make a good Chardonnay so enjoyable.

Expect ripe peach, pear and citrus on the nose, followed by a beautifully balanced palate. There’s plenty of freshness, a hint of minerality and a lovely rounded texture thanks to time spent on its fine lees.

And here's where the golfer in us comes out.

It doesn't try to overpower you. It just keeps delivering.

A bit like a really good golf course, actually. It doesn't have to be the longest, the toughest or the most famous. Sometimes the best courses are the ones that get everything right: balance, variety, quality and a few pleasant surprises along the way.

This wine has much the same appeal.

Behind the bottle is Vignerons de Buxy, a cooperative with a long history of winemaking in the Côte Chalonnaise and surrounding Burgundy vineyards. By bringing together grapes from local growers, they've built a reputation for producing wines that reflect the character of the region without commanding eye-watering prices.

And at £19.50, this is a bottle we'd happily have waiting for us after a round.

What would we pair it with?

A long summer afternoon after 18 holes. Something good sizzling on the barbecue, a few friends around the table and absolutely no reason to check the time.

The Grapes & Greens Verdict

18 holes played. Clubhouse terrace secured. A good bottle of Burgundy opened.

Hard to think of a better way to spend an afternoon.
